This individual has distinctive black tertial
spots ('inkspots') typically found only in a small
percentage of American Herring Gulls
L. smithsonianus
occurring in NE America (Killian Mullarney in litt.) and
absent in European Herring Gulls.
So far the gull in
Scheveningen represents the 1st of 5 records of this
species for The Netherlands.
